EcoSprout and the Den of Lions: Faith, Courage, and Growing Hope

August 17, 2025 • Pastor Joslyn • General Discussion

The EcoSprout series continues with another parable for today’s world—rooted in the timeless wisdom of Scripture, yet living in the soil of our modern struggle for ecological balance. Just as biblical stories remind us of courage and faith in the face of impossible odds, EcoSprouts show that even in barren places, life can return when we care for the Earth.

Setting the Stage: A Barren Hillside

Eli, the Little EcoSprout, was determined to see life flourish on a sun-scorched hillside where others had long given up. The ground cracked under his feet, the shrubs were brittle, and the wind carried dust instead of the fragrance of flowers. Yet Eli believed this place, too, could be restored.

With his small hands and a big heart, Eli gathered native seeds. Together with his friends, he dug tiny swales across the slope—shallow ditches that would catch water when the rains returned. They placed mulch around the seeds to keep the soil cool. They built shelters from fallen branches so that birds and insects would one day find a home. It was hard work, but the EcoSprouts had learned that real restoration begins with small, faithful steps.

The Voices of Doubt

As the days passed, the villagers shook their heads. “The hillside is too barren,” they said. “The soil is dead. Nothing will ever grow there again.” Their laughter stung, and their words carried the weight of discouragement.

One evening, exhausted from the day’s work, Eli lay under the stars and drifted into a dream. In this dream, he found himself in a great stone chamber. The air was thick, and the sound of low growls echoed all around him. He looked up and realized he was surrounded by lions—huge, golden beasts with piercing eyes.

Daniel’s Example

The lions circled closer, and their voices came like whispers in the dark: “You are too small.” “The land is too broken.” “Your work will not last.” Eli trembled, for the lions’ voices sounded very much like the doubts he had heard from the villagers.

Yet in that moment Eli remembered the story of Daniel. Daniel had been thrown into the lions’ den because he would not abandon his faith. He had trusted in God, and God had sent an angel to close the mouths of the lions.

Eli knelt on the cold stone and whispered a prayer: “Creator, give me courage to care for Your Earth, even when others say it cannot be done.”

The Lions Fall Silent

At once the lions stopped their pacing. Their growls faded. One by one, they lay down quietly, their great heads resting on their paws. The chamber that had seemed full of danger became a place of peace.

Eli’s heart lifted. The doubts that prowled like lions were silenced by faith. When he awoke from his dream, the first rays of dawn spilled over the hillside. And there, poking through the soil, were tiny green shoots. Life had returned.

From Den to Garden

The villagers who had doubted were astonished. They saw the green sprouts, the promise of life in a place they had written off as dead. Slowly, they joined Eli and his friends. Some carried water. Others gathered mulch. Soon the hillside echoed with the sounds of many hands working together.

What had once been a barren den of despair became a growing sanctuary—a living garden where pollinators danced, roots spread, and hope returned to the soil.

Lessons for Today

This story is more than a parable for children. It is a reminder to us all. Like Daniel in the lions’ den, we face challenges that seem overwhelming: climate change, deforestation, pollution, or even the voices that say, “Your work is too small to matter.”

Yet faith teaches us that the mouths of the lions can be closed. The voices of doubt can be silenced. Each EcoSprout step we take—whether planting a tree, restoring a riverbank, or teaching our children to care for creation—has the power to bring life where once there was none.

Faith, Courage, and Action

EcoSprout and the Den of Lions is not just a children’s tale—it is a vision for how we might live. When we face the lions of despair, we can remember Daniel’s faith and Eli’s courage. When the world says, “It cannot be done,” we can plant seeds anyway. And when doubt prowls around us, we can trust that the Creator walks with us, closing the mouths of fear and opening the way for hope.

Together we can transform barren hillsides into gardens of life. Together we can silence the lions. Together we can be EcoSprouts.
