Little EcoSprout and the Lost Stream

July 6, 2025 • Pastor Joslyn • General Discussion

It was a bright Sunday morning, and Little EcoSprout, whose real name is Eli, woke up to the sound of birds singing outside his window. He stretched and looked out to see his favorite place — a small, winding stream that danced through the meadow behind his house. But today, the stream looked different. Its water was murky, and there was trash tangled in the reeds.

Eli felt a heaviness in his heart. He remembered the words from Psalm 24:1:

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.”

He knew that the stream, the birds, the fish — they all belonged to God, and it was his job to help protect them.

Eli put on his green boots and ran outside. Along the stream, he saw plastic bottles, wrappers, and even an old shoe. The frogs looked sad, and the dragonflies hovered uncertainly above the muddy water.

As he began picking up the trash, Eli thought about the story of the Good Shepherd from John 10:11:

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

Just like the shepherd cares for each sheep, Eli realized he could be a “shepherd” for God’s creation, caring for each living thing, big or small.

Soon, his friends Maya and Sam came running to help. Maya brought a big bag for the litter, and Sam wore gloves to help pull tangled plastic out of the water. Together, they worked all morning, laughing and encouraging each other. When they finished, the stream began to sparkle again, and the frogs and fish seemed to dance in joy.

Eli sat down by the stream, feeling tired but peaceful. He looked up at the sky and whispered, “Thank You, God, for trusting me to care for Your creation.”

Just then, a gentle breeze passed by, and Eli felt as if God was smiling down on him.

That afternoon, Eli and his friends shared what they had done with their church community. The pastor reminded them of Genesis 2:15:

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

Eli felt proud but also inspired to do more. He promised himself he would keep being a good steward of God’s earth every day, not just on Sunday.
